Major artists are increasingly using mobile phones and other new technologies to generate hype and sales… “We’re trying to play into these new methods by which consumers and fans are trying to get their music,” said Brian Celler, vice president of international marketing at Epic Records, Shakira’s label owned by Sony BMG.
The article mentions Robbie Williams’ recent concert which was streamed live to 100,000 mobile phones, and goes on to cite Madonna “making ‘Hung Up’, the debut single from her eagerly-anticipated new album ‘Confessions on a Dancefloor’, available first as a ringtone via MTV.com and VH1.com”. It doesn’t mention her canny attempt to link herself with new technology by fronting the Rokr ad, maybe because the phone has been such a flop she’s wishing she hadn’t…
These are just new distribution channels though… I like the efforts of Shakira who is not only releasing her new album online a week before it hits the stores but will have MTV producing mobisodes of interviews and performances by her that will be distributed to mobile phones — which neatly adds to the product available rather than replacing it.
