inCode has made some predictions for 2006… most of which are expected by people in the industry. Aside from predicing the failure of undifferentiated MVNO’s and the emergence of a new category, “Converged Virtual Network Operator” (mobile pureplays teaming up with VoIP companies) inCode predicts that mobile TV will struggle and remain an experiment, with subscribers snacking on mobile TV where the information is timely. It also says that the service will use up a lot of 3G capacity, not mentioning anywhere the incipient launch of mobile broadcast technologies such as DVB-H, DMB and MediaFLO… which is a bit of a worry. You’d think predictions for 2006 would mention them, even just to say “they won’t be widely taken up”.
New entrants in mobile music will battle iTunes… “However, if the music industry really wants mobile music to take off, it should control its greed and work with others in the value chain to align pricing, promotions and download times across all access technologies (WiFi, cellular, etc.).” The company suggests the appearance of an MVNO “focusing solely on mobile entertainment services”.
