We’ve written about the increasingly intricate music promo packages with high-profile online and mobile elements. Windows are created to let one online music service debut an album, a portal pitch a live concert or premiere music videos, online serices steam premiere songs. Media hardware is part of the picture, too, iPod and iTunes being the most obvious examples. RealNetworks has a promo with Circuit City that ties the SanDisk 1G MP3 players into Rhapsody service, Sony is cutting content deals for the PSP, and more are in the works.
MTV Networks is heavily vested, as is to be expected. Reuters offers Madonna’s new album “Confessions on a Dancefloor” as an example — the single “Hung Up” premiered as a ringtone on MTV.com and VH1.com; both sites along with gay-oriented LOGOonline.com, will have access to the album for a week before the official release.
The promos can be a great traffic driver for ad-supported sites, which gives consumers the added benefit of premiere content for free even if it’s only for a few dayd.
