4INFO Bob wants to do away with the term “mobile content” because it is unclearly defined, or perhaps that people don’t define it in the same way. “I took a quick poll of 10 non-mobile search types, where I simply asked them to define the four phrases that we’ve been discussing. I realize this technique will not go down in the annals of mobile research, but if there is one thing to take from it — every single person defined a “mobile download” the same way, while fewer than half stated a definition of “mobile content” similar to that in Wikipedia.”
To which I say “who cares?” Few people are going to give a dictionary (or wikipedia) definition of something when asked, so if some people define mobile content as ringtones and others as games or SMS alerts or whatever instead of them all saying “any type of media formatted for mobile phones” it’s hardly going to destroy the industry. It won’t confuse people either, but constantly changing terms and meanings does confuse people. Further, comparing it with mobile downloads is ridiculous — the vast majority of mobile content, no matter what it is, has been obtained via the same action: download. That being said, I wonder how many people said they downloaded a mobile video when it was in fact streamed? And I ask again: “who cares? As long as they view the content.”
