Carl-Henric Svanberg, LM Ericsson AB’s CEO has expressed the opinion (or possibly the desperate hope) that China will issue 3G licences in the first quarter of 2006. His reasoning? “The Chinese government needs to increase 3G subscriber numbers by 2007 so as to support the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Therefore, the development of the Chinese 3G network needs to be started in 2006, probably in the first quarter of 2006.”
I don’t know what the government will do if the local TD-SCDMA standard isn’t ready by then…
