“South Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung announced this week that 200,200 subscribers have signed up for mobile TV services based on its home-grown satellite digital mobile broadcasting (S-DMB) mobile TV technology.” Subscriptions cost around $20 per month for access to over 10 TV channels and a number of radio stations.
Samsung plans to bring its DMB technology to Europe where it will compete with the DVB-H standard, and has finished development of T-DMB (terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting) handsets, which has the signal broadcast from towers instead of satellites. I’m not sure which one it’s planning for Europe, or if both technologies are on the table. Anyone know?
In a surprising move, Samsung has reportedly developed a dual DMB, DVB-H handset. I’m not sure whether the added cost is offset by economies of scale, or whether Samsung forsees some users wanting to subscribe to all the mobile TV packages in the same way that some people get cable from two different suppliers. It doesn’t seem like it would be a large market, though…
Finally, “the handset manufacturing unit of Samsung Electronics accounts for approximately 30% of the company’s revenue”…
