Chinese mobile content provider Linktone, which trades on Nasdaq, has made an invested in 9Sky, a digital music download provider in China, and as a result, gained majority stake in the company. Over the course of the next two years, Linktone has the rights to acquire the remaining stake in 9Sky
9Sky currently has agreements with many local and international record labels such as Sony BMG and EMI, and offers digital music streaming services to a community of about one million registered users, and is in the process of introducing licensed full-track download services, something of a rarity in China. Linktone plans to integrate 9Sky’s services and community with its own mobile music offerings.
Meanwhile, on a related note, Linktone has been trying to make inroads into the U.S. market, especially on the mobile side, and has been scouting for opportunities, including acquisitions. Expect some more action there soon…
