[by Mike Butcher @ MIPCOM] Former BBC Director General and current HIT Entertainment Chairman Greg Dyke, said (intending irony) on a panel here at MIPCOM “People have been telling me content is king for years, but how many content producers are actually here? The traditional broadcaster has to change. Content per say won’t be king just yet, as the traditional ad-funded broadcaster has a life in it yet.”
Multichanel TV, shows, BBC and ITV have gone into multichannel, and Freeview (overtake sky next year) – trad free-to air broadcasters can do multichannel and the original multichannel like sky are being challenged.
He also said PVRs are a challenge to the traditional TV business “only if you assume the traditional broadcaster doesn’t just change his own schedule to allow for time-shifting. If viewers don’t PVR ‘date tv’ like news, sports and soaps, then you are just going to broadcast more of that premium TV.”
And because of PVRs, last ad of the break is going to be more valuable, since that’s what people stop at when PVRing.
