This is a fairly logical move, which could be quite nifty…MobileBday.com is a free service from Juice Wireless which offers free birthday SMS alerts as well as the ability to create a mobile greeting card (which can be personalized with an uploaded photograph and message). Now Juice has launched mGifts — which is basically an SMS which follows the birthday alert with a link to buy presents. When someone has just been reminded of a birthday its a good time to put this sort of information in front of them, but I don’t understand why it can’t be included in the original message…wouldn’t that be simpler and less prone to people getting annoyed at the ad?
Anyway, the first company to sign up is FTD.com which offers a 1800 number to call or a URL if people would rather use the Web…and also includes a voucher with a 10% discount, which follows the rule that ads on mobiles have to offer a benefit to the receiver.
