Audible‘s mobile, over-the-air book and audio download service, called Audble Air, gets good marks from David Pogue of NYT. It’s available now for the Palm Treo 600 or 650 and Wi-Fi-equipped Palm organizers; a version for Windows Mobile-based cellphones is expected in the coming weeks.
Audible’s cellphone-download feature has its own limitations, but also offers some neat solutions. You can’t actually browse and buy new Audible recordings on the phone; instead, the Audible Air software shows you only a list of recordings and subscriptions that you’ve already added to your library, using a computer.
In general, he says, Audible Air works beautifully; most of the drawbacks have to do with Audible itself. The price seems high, especially considering that you’re paying nearly full, hardbound-edition book price and getting only a computer file that costs Audible nothing to duplicate.
