Gannett earnings dipped 4 percent to $297 million compared to $310.2 million in the same period last year. Broadcasting was the main drag, with revenues down 19.3 percent without the Olympian boost and political ads from last year. The newspaper scene was complicated by a series of transactions that closed during the quarter.
As for online, no numbers about advertising or bottom-line contribution when it comes to the company’s 120-plus domestic publishing and broadcast-related sites. Here’s all the report had to say about performance: “In September, Gannett’s consolidated domestic Internet audience share totaled 21.4 million unique visitors reaching approximately 14 percent of the Internet audience according to Nielsen//NetRatings. Newsquest is also an Internet leader in the United Kingdom where its network Web sites attracted 120 million monthly page impressions from approximately 11 million unique users in the third quarter.” Internet investments like PointRoll are included in non-operating items.
I’ll let you know if the earnings call replay includes any illumination on the company’s internet strategy.
