Nokia has launched an online campaign, N-Gage Academy, to “teach mobile phone users how to download and share games”. People with the right phone can download a free mini-game and share it with their friends via Bluetooth, the idea being to show people how easy it is to download games, and to share them. “Visitors to the N-Gage Academy can simply send a mini-game to another compatible Nokia mobile phone, either by WAP/GPRS settings or, by downloading the mini-game ZIP file to a personal computer for transfer by Bluetooth or MMC, with at least 2MB of memory.”
Not every publisher will want their games swapped over Bluetooth, but there are several business models that could benefit…the game I played at the N-Gage Academy had ads for N-Gage products between each level, although the games themselves can be a promotion for Nokia. Product-sponsored games can also benefit from viral distribution, as can games that are given away free for people to buy extra levels and personalization things.
