Industry Moves: Getler Joins PBS As First Ombudsman; Will Use PBS.org As Platform

I had the pleasure — and intellectual stimulus — of being part of a journalism ethics seminar with Michael Getler at Washington & Lee earlier this year. Safe to say, he does not suffer fools gladly. Getler wrote his last column as ombudsman for the Washington Post Sunday and will join PBS Nov. 15, reporting directly to PBS President and CEO Pat Mitchell, with PBS.org as the outlet for his reports and commentary. He will “seek to ensure that PBS upholds its own rigorous standards of journalistic ethics for both online and on-air content.”
It marks the first primarily online gig for Getler, who was executive editor of the IHT and a long-time reporter and editor at the Post before taking the contract position of ombudsman.
I love the line in the press release that describes PBS.org as “the third most trafficked dot-org on the Internet.” This is the latest in a series of moves meant to extend the PBS presence online.Press release.
