Romance isn’t dead and neither are eBooks. Harlequin Enterprises’ deals with Lightning Source, Motricity’s eReader.com and OverDrive will put a mix of the publisher’s series romance and women’s fiction on hadnhelds, mobile phones and PCs. Each selected title — including current NYT bestseller 50 Harbor Street by Debbie Macomber — will be available in multiple formats.
Publisher and CEO Donna Hayes via press release: “Harlequin became a publishing industry leader by making our books
available wherever and whenever women shop. With this announcement we are extending that strategy by also making our stories available in other formats, such as audio, manga and now e-books so that our readers have a choice to read our books when they want to, where they want to — and how they want to.” (To which I’ll add, without anyone knowing they’re reading chick lit instead of The Search.)
Motrocity VP Vickie Gibbs says Harlequin titles are among the most requested at eReader.com and romance is one of the top categories. Harlequin has its own section with a promo for 15 percent off the first purchase and a sampler for downloading.
