Disney Fine-Tunes Wireless Scheme

Disney Mobile LogoDisney is busy working out the kinks of its planned MVNO…there are some interesting points from the article:
Disney thinks a customized handset is critical to the success of the MVNO. This is true — especially of content companies. Large providers of content such as Disney will not want to restrict their mobile content to users of their phone service — that would eliminate the vast majority of the population as potential customers, which is not very bright. But they still have to offer something special for people to sign up to their MVNO…every piece of exclusive content is a piece of content not available to be sold elsewhere, so the best place to offer the exclusivity is on the handset.
Also, “One of the most critical elements will be the user interface, something that George Grobar, senior vice president and general manager, admits has been difficult for others to get right. “I think that’s been one impediment to data consumption among adults. They don’t know how to get to it.”
The interesting thing about this interview is that Disney seems to understand that great mobile content does not an MVNO make. Whether they can produce the goods is a different matter, but I think they’re heading in the right direction.
