Telecoms research firm Analysys has released a report saying that “while 3G will carry the majority of mobile and TV video traffic for the next five years, high take-up could fill the networks by 2007″. Which is a bit odd, considering that many carriers are planning on launching mobile broadcasting networks within the next 2-3 years. The report also said that if 40% of 3G users consumed 8 minutes of video a day it would exceed the capacity of a typical W-CDMA network by 2007…although that sort of uptake is beyond the expectations of all but the most starry-eyed industry players.
“A relatively little-known 3G feature, Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service (MBMS), could hold the key to relieving predicted pressure on 3G networks, Analysys believes.”
