This is possibly the biggest non-CTIA story this week: UK operator O2 is launching i-mode service, with content partners including the BBC, BSkyB and online bank Egg, on October 1. The service, created by Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo and requiring an i-mode compatible handset, will allow customers to access online sites such as news, sport and games as well as content created specifically for i-mode.
Reuters: O2’s own brand has proved a runaway success across its British, Irish and German businesses and some analysts believe it has now leapfrogged that of Orange, the mobile phone rival owned by France Telecom, whose brand was once dubbed the most successful in cellular history. The new phones — two handsets made by Japan’s NEC and two from South Korea’s Samsung — will be available from October 1 and offer what is billed as the first true Internet on a mobile phone at the touch of a button.
