While NewYorkTimes.com looks for revenue by walling off some content, the Online Journal continues to tweak the free offerings that are bringing in additional traffic and potential pay subs. One example: a “tracker” that followed the news of Hurricane Katrina and has been reactivated to deal with Hurricane Rita. During initial Katrina coverage, the Crisis Tracker saw more traffic in a week than any WSJ.com story in an entire month, according to managing editor Bill Grueskin.
Now dubbed Storm Tracker, the blog-like breaking-news digest is updated regularly (overnight, too) from sources including the AP, the Journal and Dow Jones Newswires. Like other free Journal pages, there’s a “subscribe now” display promo and an ad position plus quick-scan navigation that shows off the rest of WSJ.com and Dow Jones’ free sites with MarketWatch at the top of the list. Meanwhile, MarketWatch has a front-page link back to the Storm Tracker.
