Viacom’s impending buyout of iFilm, a story we broke last night, was buzzing in the hallways of the conference today. Besides just the deal points, some other macro factors are at work here, which is what many companies were thinking about today.
The first is that most of the top-tier online pureplays are off the market now, with the exception of CNET and iVillage. The Viacom-iFilm deal is the first among the second tier plays, and others are wondering whether that means this opens up the doors for the other such smaller content plays. There’s talk about the M&A windows being wide open now, and possibly leading into the early to mid-2006. Some other obvious players are wondering whether they should hold out another year and sell when the valuations are even higher.
My one line non-advice to everyone and anyone who cares to listen: if you’re getting the money, take it and run..
