I think the current debate over what type of games to put on mobiles — gee-whiz console-like games or simple puzzle games — miss the fact that all these games have a place and audience in the mobile format. The important thing is helping mobile users find the sort of games they want…
On the simple end, iFone has released Atari Legends 3 which includes the old classics of Pong, Asteroids Deluxe and Super Breakout — none of which I think need an introduction even for my youngest readers. Meanwhile, I-play has announced the world-wide launch of unlikely-themed Skipping Stone, created by Korean company Gamevil. It’s apparently quite good (I like the graphics I saw on the Gamevil site, anyway) with one reviewer saying “If you don’t smile while playing Skipping Stone, you must be dead on the inside…”
Living Mobile has also released a game called Aquababe, which goes straight into the ‘quirky’ category. “Arm yourself with a dung fork and a watering can! Through unexplained mysterious circumstances, vegetables in your neighbourhood have mutated into living threats! Since then, several species cavort in the gardens and destroy the landscape. Lead “Aquababe” Alice and displace “Larry the lingering leek”, “Carl the crazy carrot” and “Albert the abnormal asparagus!” Pure Gold.
Finally, Fathammer — which creates 3D games which seem to sell mostly in Asia — has signed a deal with operator TeliaSonera Oyj to put its games on the Sonera SurfPort mobile portal. This will strengthen Fathammers’ position in Europe, where it is relatively weak compared to Asia and the US.
