Digitally delivered replicas of print magaines are popping up as publishers look for an online match to the experience of thumbing through glossy pages. Fortune emailed invitations to read its hefty 75th anniversary edition digitally, making a complete replica of every page available online and including interactive ads with the aid of Olive Software. (The link goes to the Oct. 3 issue now.) What would once have been a painfully slow experience for most readers now loads quickly and can be saved for offline reading. I downloaded an issue of Fortune in less time than it took to write this.
Digital publishers like Zinio pitch the editions as way to tap into an audience used to getting its entertainment and information from a screen.
No one’s suggesting the digital magazine is a replacement for print but for a lot of us it could be a more satisfying way of reading some magazines online.
