AOL’s TotalTalk VoIP service launches Oct. 4, promising savings of up to 40 percent off monthly phone bills compared to traditional landline service — and full phone capabilities. Monthly rates range from $18.99 to $34.99. No AOL subscription is required; current AOL Internet Phone subs will be upgraded automoatically. TotalTalk includes free PC-to-PC calls and PC-to-Phone calling capabilities (available later this week via a preview edition of AIM Triton); unified voice, e-mail and instant messaging; enhanced voicemail and call management capabilities; and the ability to make and receive calls on a home phone line from anywhere users have access to AIM. AOL already offers TotalTalk in Canada.
This makes the fuss over Google Talk, which isn’t close to a full VoIP/SIP service, almost laughable — and it may provide even greater competition to Skype than Yahoo’s version. It also could cause problems for cable companies counting on VoIP.
