(reg. req.) AOL is at it again, and is now collaborating with TelePictures Productions (its sister company…part of Warner Bros.), to launch an entertainment industry website called TMZ.com (Thirty Mile Zone, an entertainment industry term referring to the area around Hollywood), reports LATimes. The plans, to be announced today, will lead up to the launch of the site in October.
Along with the two companies, the third and leading party in the venture is Harvey Levin, the creator of the canceled syndication show “Celebrity Justice”. After TelePictures pulled the plug on the show, Levin was approached about starting this website with AOL and he joined the venture in July. He assembled a team of 25 working in the former “Celebrity Justice” offices in Glendale.
The staffers will gather news and features on celebrities from films, TV music and even video games, then distribute it online. They will also provide access to 12 years of archived footage from “Extra,” Telepictures’ celebrity news TV program.
AOL will gets the advertising revenue from TMZ.com. Slightly unclear for now, but it looks like TMZ.com might be strucutred on the same lines at the NetworkLive venture (run and owned by Kevin Wall, with AOL, XM and AEG having some stake in the venture).
We’ll have more details in the morning…
