[by Mike Butcher] Qpass, which operates and manages whole mobile services for mobile carriers, came out with two new announcements at MCW. It claims to have hit a milestone of 300m purchase transactions, equal to $720m in volume. Typical purchases were ringtones, games, wallpaper, music and video. In Europe the properties they managing encompass One in Austria and T-Mobile across Europe and Vodafone in Ireland. Although Qpass has no presence at all in Asia (something of an oversight given the size of the market there) word on the conference floor was that they are announcing a new presence there in November. Secondly, the new Qpass Content Service launches today as a broker service between content providers/aggregators and mobile carriers. This means they will broker transactions, but not take revenue from the price of the content. Qpass claims the advantage to carriers is that, because it manages multiple services for multiple operators, it can keep abreast of new trends in the market. However, frankly most operators will be employing people to track trends themselves. Lastly, QPass is understood to be looking at VoIP – hardly a surprise given the recent interest in Skype – and plans an announcement of a deal with an Internet-based VoIP network “soon”, said sources. GoogleTalk anyone?
