In response to a posting from Mike, writing about the lack of content providers at the Mobile Content World conference going on in London this week, a comment from Gideon Marken hits close to my heart: These conferences are so expensive that smaller players, doing a lot of innovative work, can’t possibly afford to go to these: “Why is there no content? Because we can’t afford to go to the conferences.
I run a music service, I have over 4,400 songs on the site by 3,500 independent artists. I’m the kind of person who should be at these shows.
Why am I not attending? Because these conferences cost way too much to attend. You’d have to already be an established business doing well to afford a conference that costs $4,065.62 USD to attend. Add to that a plane ticket, a hotel room, food, etc – and now this conference costs more than it does to keep my service online for a year.
