The Hindu Business Line: India has the lowest cellular tariffs in the world, and is one of the most happening telecom markets. But the international bandwidth tariff, despite a 65 per cent drop in prices announced by the telecom regulator last week, is still one of the highest in the world. The telecom regulator, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, has blamed lack of adequate competition in the international long distance segment as the reason for the high tariffs.
The difference is like this: In Japan, a 2-mega bits per second (Mbps) line costs Rs 1 million while the same costs Rs 1.3 million in India. Similarly, a 45 Mbps line in South Korea costs Rs 4.4 million lakh while the same costs over Rs 10 million in India. While a 155 Mbps line costs Rs 13.2 milion in Singapore it costs more than Rs 20 million in the hottest telecom market in the world. Even in a small country like Hong Kong, charges for a 155 Mbps line are only Rs 13 million.
