FMC: Monetizing the Back Catalog

[by Derek Slater] Jim Urie, President of Universal Music & Video Distribution, provided some interesting data about their back catalog. Of the 17,000 titles in their vaults, 11,000 are already out in the online music stores, but 6,000 are either missing some component (e.g., cover art, liner notes) or lack sufficient contractual information to be licensed.

If roughly a third of record companies’ vaults are unlicensed for such reasons, that amounts to a substantial problem — and a significant business opportunity. They can try to monetize the back catalog and hidden gems through the online music stores, and Snocap may also be able to help by leveraging the songs already published on P2P networks.
