Last month Channel 4 in the UK indicated it was going to go into original mobile content in a big way, and this is an example of that. It’s selling mobile video clips based on a drama series (named Totally Frank) about four girls forming a band. “Rather than being a bolt-on, the ‘mobisodes’ will offer viewers exclusive content that will enable them to make more sense of the TV show…Channel 4 mobile editor Sheena Peirse said, “The mobisodes don’t affect what happens on the TV show but give viewers some great insights. If you’re a real Frank fan this is a great opportunity to get more involved.”
The clips involve the whole cast (rather than just being based on the same concept) and do two things — add flexibility to the story line, which is trapped in the 30-minute TV format…and provide extra funds for Channel 4 which (if I understand correctly) is a public station that has to raise its own funds. The price for the mobisodes wan’t revealed in the article. Anyway, I’m pretty sure this is where mobile video is heading, at least in relation to TV shows.
