Kids returning to school are buying ringtones based on popular teen movies, past and present…yet another licensing opportunity for studios. “When the initiative began, Stuyvesant said it was a difficult product to bring to market because of the licensing issues. “You have to clear each clip with the studio and with the individual actors,” she said. “And if there is somebody in the background making a sound that you can’t clear — another character laughing, for example — then you’re out of luck.”
Studios are now clearing the relevant rights ahead of time, which makes things easier, but it is a struggle to clear older content…
The article mentions ringtones, but if you’re going to put in movie quotes it would be silly not to offer video ringtones…
