Yahoo’s Hot Zone

As Staci wrote in the story below, Yahoo Media Group has made its first big overture into original content, hiring former CNN correspondent to write from the world’s war zones. The site, Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone, launched today, but the feature will launch later this month.

This move is significant in what it shows Yahoo might not do: create a news infrastrucutre. This latest venture is almost akin to what National Georgraphic or Discovery (or even PBS or NPR) would do online, not on the lines of what say NYT or WaPo would do. The fact that the site is NOT being launched under “Yahoo News” umbrella (judging from the site URL) is also indicative.

Also carefuly read the “Declaration of Principles” on the site…that will give you an idea of how serious Yahoo is about this. “Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone is news reporting for the new millennium – a nexus of backpack journalism, narrative story-telling techniques, and the Internet, designed to reach a global audience hungry for information.”
