A survey by IDC Australia has found that “the vast majority of Australians still have no clear idea about 3G mobile technology”. This has been put down to Hutchison promoting its service through cheap voice calls but probably wasn’t helped by the mud the other telcos through into the water to hide the fact their networks were a generation behind Hutchison’s.
The survey also found that one-half of the mobile phones currently used are camera equipped, one-quarter have MP3 playback functionality, and one-fifth have built-in radio technology… and that while perceptions of 3G among those aware of the technology were highly fragmented their propensity to adopt 3G services is very high.
Considering the content that is available on 3G networks and the fact that all the major telcos in Australia will offer the service (and therefore the cheap calls) by the end of the year its time the telcos started explaining what else is possible on 3G networks beside video calls. I suspect that whichever telco does the best job of explaining what it offers will get the most new sign-ups…
