Rebuilt New Orleans Could Be State Of Broadband Art

On my last visit to New Orleans, I was beyond ecstatic to find high-speed access in my hotel. The antiquated systems made high-tech improvements costly and difficult. But Bell South CTO Bill Smith says a rebuilt New Orleans could end up being state of the art, telling USA Today, “… if you were bound and determined to find a silver lining to this catastrophe, one could say that there is the potential here to rebuild a state-of-the-art network in every respect.” That depends, of course, on how much of the communications infrastructure can be salvaged and how much has to be replaced. Fiber-optic and IP versus copper-wire decisions probably will have to wait until the city dries out and a full survey can be completed.
