Well, that didn’t take long…while people around the web deride the Rokr E1 others are already moving on to predicting the “one true iPhone”, which will of course be much better than the joint effort with Motorola. Adam Sextonfrom Groove Mobile summed up the (possibly relieved) attitude of other mobile music players: “For mobile music, the iTunes phone is one step forward, two steps back. Mobile music is a new medium not just an extension of the computer. And because the iTunes phone requires a computer, a broadband account, an iTunes subscription and a credit card, it excludes the largest music demo — young people — who are the tastemakers for new bands. Worse, the phone doesn’t allow people to share songs, a key component of the true mobile music experience and arguably the best part of listening to music.”
Reuters has run a story (linked to in the title) about the real iPhone:
Ultimately Apple may introduce its own cell-phone iPod combination, dubbed the “iPhone,” designed by Apple itself from the ground up and which would most likely be made by a contract electronics manufacturer, such as Flextronics or others.
But don’t expect it in the next year or so, analysts said, noting that Apple, which is based in Cupertino, California, has a number of hurdles to overcome. Among them: partnering with a cellular phone carrier to resell minutes on its network and choosing a contract handset maker to produce the devices, which must work with the different cellular transmission standards.
That’s right, the Apple MVNO rumor is back in fashion…we’re not going to see Apple move into this market for a couple of years, if at all, but we’re going to keep reading about it…
