Podcast Hotel Presents Podcast Jams, one of the first podcast-centric conferences, wrapped up Thursday in Portland. Aimed at “indie musicians, geeks and anyone interested in the indie media and podcasting phenomena,” the focus was a mix of instruction, podcasting as a business model for indie artists and licensing/copyright issues.
Matt May writes about a licensing panel he was on with Rumblefish CEO Paul Anthony. The indie rights clearning house clears tracks for podcasting for a $5 fee with DRM; only 75 percent of the track is licensed and artist attribution is required. May says it’s a step forward but “is still tied to an increasingly antiquated model.” He proposes the Portland License — content owners would allo royalty-free access, full tracks, no DRM; podcasters would report playlists, not play more than two tracks from the same album in a show, not play pre-release music without permission, give full attribution, link to purchase info, use a legal copy and not run 3rd-party ads in exchange for commission.
