Access Inc., a Tokyo-based company that develops Internet and mobile software, is buying out PalmSource, the U.S. maker of software for handheld computers and mobile phones, for as much as 35.8 billion yen ($324 million). The company will use PalmSource to expand applications for mobile phones. PalmSource had a market value of $169.8 million as of yesterday.

LinuxDevices: Access claims that NetFront has 150 million deployments in 342 unique devices from 90 manufacturers, making it perhaps the world’s most ubiquitous embedded browser. It supports Linux, Palm, Symbian, Windows Mobile/PocketPC, BREW, and other embedded operating systems.
Reuters: PalmSource has been struggling to win new licensees for its software in the face of increased competition from Microsoft and announced in June restructuring including a 16 percent cut in its workforce.
