A recent survey had 15% of respondents reply that their biggest concern with mobile content/data was losing it when changing handsets, and you can bet a lot more have it as a major concern, if not the biggest one. Which results in moves like Vodafone Sweden, which is offering its customers — including those who lose their mobile phones — the ability to manage their contact details online when changing to a new phone model. The telco is working in conjunction with Storegate and will provide internet-based storage for “phone books, calendars and other digital information accessible directly by mobile phone”. No direct mention of content files such as music, photos, games and so on. I don’t know whether big content-owning companies will require some sort of license to transfer their content from one device to another during an upgrade, but most people with multimedia phones have plenty of their own content on the handset too which they’d like to move. The issue has to be dealt with.
