Russell Beattie believes that Symbian has missed its chance to become the dominant player in the mobile OS space and it will gradually be replaced by Linux. He’s got several arguments, but the main ones that stick in my mind is that it is easier to develop for Linux than for Symbian, and there is a far greater developer base which means more applications more rapidly. He doesn’t think Microsoft will get anywhere because no-one is willing to partner with it — “in general dealing with Microsoft is dealing with the devil (as Sendo’s demise has shown us) and everyone knows it”.
This probably won’t matter directly to the user, but the simpler it is to develop content the more content there will be, so in the end the issue is pretty important to everybody.
