The country has completed 10 years since the first mobile phone call was made in Kolkata on August 22, 1995. It has been a tumultous decade with a series of ups and downs characterised by regulatory upheavals, policy flip-flops and so on. But it has also been a terrific decade because telecom is the only successful privatsiation experiment in the Indian infrastructure sector. The result is evident, India currently has 60 million subscribers. The tele-density has gone up from 0.8 in 1994 to almost 10.
