Rich Gordon points out a good white paper from a University of Chicago economist Matthew Gentzkow, who studies the competition between print and online newspapers, taking the Washington DC market as a region eample and WaPo as the specific newspaper in question.
He concludes that there is a major loss in readership and print revenues because of online versions of newspaper, but that charging for online version might help in stemming that tide.
Whether you agree with the conclusions or not, it is a provocative study and som good questions to consider: Are print and online newspapers substitutes or complements? How might demand respond if papers were to charge positive prices for online content that is currently provided free of charge? And how has the introduction of online news affected the welfare of consumers and newspaper
