Industry Response To Hurricane Katrina Begins

Viacom is using its multi-platform enthusiasm for a Hurricane Katrina relief campaign including a live Sept. 10 concert simulcast across CMT, MTV, VH1, MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and broadband networks MTV Overdrive and VSpot. All ll CMT, VH1, and MTV platforms are taking part in an “awareness campaign” telling viewers how to get involved in relief efforts. (Press release.) In contrast, NBCU will host a benefit concert Sept. 2 on NBC (in high-def), CNBC and MSNBC but the announcement doesn’t mention an online component.

Yahoo is collecting money for the Red Cross and linking prominently to the Network for Good. According to the Chronicle for Philanthropy, the company already has raised more than $11.8 million. Amazon, too, is collecting for the Red Cross.

– Through a partnership with M-Qube, Verizon Wireless customers can donate $5 to the Red Cross by texting “2HELP” through Oct. 31. $25 maximium.

– Apple iTunes sent a Red Cross donation request to its mailing list.

The Walt Disney Company is donating $2.5 million to relief efforts.
