The 50,000 or so daily downloads of vlog news spoof Rocketboom put it ahead of some local newscasts in terms of audience after doubling in the last six weeks. An upcoming subscription package may put that popularity to the test. According to BusinessWeek, the three-minute daily segments will remain free but creator Andrew Michael Baron and co-writer/anchor Amanda Congdon will start charging $3.50 a month for a package of extras, including longer shows. They told BW they’d rather try the subscription route than change the nightly “newscast” to accommodate advertising. Ads remain the fallback position.
The show has a fervent following but how many will pay $42 a year for the privilege? The answer will help other standalones set a course.
