Wired News: Intel’s vision for the not-so-distant futire relies on the success of WiMax as a disruptive technology that could shake up Hollywood, telecom and multi-channel delievery. The article notes that more than 100 WiMax trials are underway around the world although it doesn’t point out that Intel is financing many of them.
– PCMag: Even with WiMax, Intel can’t succeed without digital rights management that work for consumers as well as the rightsholders. That’s Don Whiteside’s job as VP-technology and policy standards. The trick is finding that balance. Whiteside: “In this country we have the concept of fair use. We own a private copy. … You have to let consumers do some copying for their own use.” He thinks some of that balance can be achieved by selling copies the way software is licensed. “You could buy a version that lets you make one personal copy. Another would let you make five copies.”
– ARNnet: Speaking of financing WiMax, Intel is investing $37 million in Australian wireless provider Unwired to advance WiMax rollout.
