Podcast Roundup: PodSafe, Pod Metrics, Hype

:In case you haven’t noticed, podcasting is the “it” accessory of the season. Multichannel News is telling cable operators how to use podcasting for local ad sales. SBC has a podcasting FAQ. Apple even launched a podcast directory in Taiwan to boost iTunes. We could populate paidContent.org with podcasting links — some even newsworthy — but we’ll restrain ourselves.

News.com: PodShow, the podcasting start-up run by Adam Curry and Ron Bloom, is launching PodSafe, a music network designed to give podcasters access to royalty-free music and other content. That’s one way to spend some of the recently closed $8.85 million in funding. The launch is being sponsored by Absolut. Press release.
MediaWeek: Arbitron says it completed a successful test last month using its portable people meters (PPM) to measure listening to Clear Channel podcasts. Clear Channel is adamant about including alternative delivery in any new electronic measurement system for ratings.

Moneyweb: Despite the hype, podcasting is still moving up the first curve of Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, behind VoIP but ahead of text mining and an estimated 2-5 years away from peaking. Includes chart.
