Carlo Longino has put up an interesting post at MobHappy about yesterdays Teaze Not Sleaze (which said that maybe mobile content wasn’t going to be driven by pornography after all). He compared the predicted growth in mobile pornography with the predicted growth in mobile subscribers and came to the conclusion that “porn spending per subscriber won’t even hold steady”, which could be a worry for the industry.
He also picked up on a comment by Julia Dimambro, director and co-founder of Cherry Media, which operates Cherrysauce, that “the wap.cherrysauce.com age-verified mobile site gets 300,000 hits a month with no marketing behind it”, and pointed out that back in February that number was stated at 1 million hits per month.
In the words of Carlo, “Either the company’s playing fast and loose with its numbers to try and make the market look bigger than it really is, or it’s seen a dramatic drop over the last six months. Whichever is true, neither one reflects too well on the company or the mobile porn industry.” I don’t know whether pornography sales are seasonal, but I doubt that they are that seasonal…
