Second Generation Micropayment Systems: Lesson Learned

A good academic white paper on the prospects for success of second-generation micropayments systems.

The paper contains an overview of first (the ones started around mid-90s) and second generation (started around 2000) micropayment systems and compares their key characteristics to determine their success or failure.

“Just like what happened with credit card systems, the end effect of competition will be that only a few, globally accepted micropayment systems will survive. Until then, and due to the lack of standardization results, regional payment systems will have to interoperate to facilitate world-wide micropayments.”
