Puzzles Drive Mobile Game Market

Everyone knows puzzle games are leading the charge into the mobile gaming market, and a study by Telephia as found that these games (along with certain strategy games) account for a third of mobile game revenue (the strategy games appear to be things like Chess).
“Four out of the top five revenue generating mobile games fall into this category. And it’s the cream of the crop that brings in the money, the top 30 games bringing in 80 percent of the mobile gaming sector’s revenue“.
The study found Jamdat’s Tetris has 7.9 percent of the market, followed by Penultimate’s Chess 2.0 (6.3 percent) and Sony Pictures Mobile’s Jeaopardy! 2005 (6.2 percent)…I’m not sure what they mean by “percent of the market”, whether that’s 7.9 percent of games sold or 7.9 percent of players have the game. A similar situation can be seen in the UK.
Having a few blockbuster games account for so much of the market can’t be a good thing for the industry, and hopefully as more people start playing (and buying) mobile games the market will level out…
