Sony Ericsson is apparently going to sell its $500 W800 Walkman phone (aimed at Europe) in the US via a website rather than through a carrier. The company claims that the carriers don’t want to support it because the phone uses the 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz and 900 MHz bands, while GSM carriers in the United States use the 1900 MHz and 850 MHz bands. However, it declined to say whether a carrier would support the W600 Walkman phone (designed for the US) or when it would be available…
Like most other dedicated music phones the Walkman phones will allow people to copy music from their computers. It will be interesting to see how well the phones sell, but somehow I don’t think the W800 will make too big a splash in the US…
