Why India Can Become A Happening Gaming Market

Game Daily: Charles Huang, Founder/VP of Business Development, RedOctane, was in India recently. RedOctane has just established a subsidiary in Chennai, one of India’s first video game development studios. Huang’s impressions of India and his three reasons why India could emerge as a leading gaming market.
1) The nascent game development industry in India is climbing the international learning curve. Accredited schools for professional training are sprouting up. Government offices have been established to advance animation and game development industries. There are a few indigenous game development and animation studios.
2) India has a large domestic market full of technology savvy youngsters who are beginning to play games, mostly online PC games. While online games have not reached the same fever pitch as in China or Korea, the absolute numbers can quickly grow to staggering proportions in a country that is nearly 1 billion in population. Already, I see investments in place to launch gaming. The massive Indian conglomerate Reliance (owned by one of India’s richest families) operates the chain of popular Webworld Internet cafe that I visited. As in China and Korea, fast rollout of Internet cafes should propel growth in online games.
3) American game companies are positioning to make a move in India. U.S. industry press barely noticed Electronics Arts’ June announcement that they appointed Vivek Paul to its Board of Directors.
