BBC Opens Up Creative Archive With Some Content

BBC’s ambitious online archives project, the Creative Archive, has finally been populated with some content from BBC’s video archives, in a trial with Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra. The content includes about 100 clips especially chosen with VJ’s in mind…the idea being that users will download and mash them up into whatever creative form they choose to.

The service is restricted to UK users only, for now. The material available covers natural history, wildlife, science, locations, art and more. There are also shots of cityscapes, sunsets, seascapes and other visuals.

The Creative Archive project, announced with much fanfare in 2003, has been languishing a bit due to various copyright and clearance issues. Over that period, BBC has opened up the project to include other content providers across UK, to include Channel 4,
Open University, and British Film Institute, and has developed the “Creative Archive Licence”, a single, shared user licence scheme for the downloading of moving images, audio and stills.

Would be interesting to see the results of this trial…
