Do two make a trend? Warner Brothers’ “Batman Begins” came with its own Firefox theme and Wednesday Time Warner sibling HBO will start distributing a theme built around its new series “Rome” (coproduced with the BBC). One big difference between the two: the Batman theme appears simply to be part of the download package while the “Rome” theme plays an active marketing role. In addition to being available on the site, Firefox users viewing “Rome” ads will be able to download it by clicking on ads running on Salaon and NYTimes.com, as CNET explains.
Firefox’s viral nature and its effusive community makes it a good bet for this kind of approach but I wonder if getting that commercial could be a turn-off for some users.
